Bruder Klaus Kapelle

The Brother Klaus Field Chapel is a privately donated Roman Catholic chapel built between 2005 and 2007 above the village of Mechernich-Wachendorf in the Eifel region in Germany. The chapel was built according to plans by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. For the construction, a tent-shaped construction made of 112 spruce trunks was first erected. The chapel's body was made of tamped concrete around this inner structure, which was laid in layers of 50 cm to a height of 12 meters in 24 days by a volunteer tamping team together with specialist craftsmen according to the region's traditional craftsmanship. A mott fire was maintained inside for three weeks in the fall of 2006, which charred the tree trunks and detached them from the concrete so they could be easily removed [Source: Wikipedia].
